Sometimes rigorously abstract images emerge through the physical energy of mark marking and layering. As a musician I prefer music without words; as an artist there is something direct and complete about paintings without figurative references.
These abstracts may unpredictably trigger real world associations in the viewer`s mind. In other paintings images from the real world are intentionally abstracted, allowing viewers to create their own realities. Most are marine related - the enclosure and protection of harbour walls, the passing encounters of boats and bridges or the navigable reaches of the River Tamar.

Each painting builds on the last and is a surprise.
